Some activities may have specific seasonal requirements, so read on to discover Perhentian Islands’ attractions and activities for a perfect tropical getaway.
Snorkeling
The Perhentian Islands are known for their astonishing underwater world, making them one of the top snorkeling spots in Malaysia. With turquoise clear waters and a thriving marine park that boasts incredible biodiversity, it’s no wonder snorkeling is the number one reason people visit these islands.
As you immerse yourself in this breathtaking underwater realm, you’ll have the chance to observe various marine life, including blacktip reef sharks at Shark Point, sea turtles, colourful fish, stingrays, clownfish, and coral reefs.
Make the most of your snorkeling adventure by planning your visit during the best time. The ideal period to snorkel in the Perhentian Islands is from March to October when the weather is favourable, and water conditions are optimal.
There are a couple of ways to go snorkeling in the Perhentian Islands. You can join a snorkelling trips, which offers a guided experience and typically includes equipment. A half-day guided tour costs RM 30-40 per person.
Alternatively, you can rent snorkeling gear and explore the waters near the shore. To do this, head to popular spots like Teluk Keke, in front of Coral View Island Resort, or Teluk Pauh in Perhentian Besar.
However, you will only see a little if you stay at Long Beach or Coral Bay. If you decide to snorkel at Long Beach, head to the north end close to Mimpi Jetty for the best chance of spotting some fish.
Snorkeling equipment rental is available at almost all resorts, with prices starting at around RM 20 for the gear.
Scuba Diving
Thanks to the region’s rich marine biodiversity, Scuba diving is another popular activity in the Perhentian Islands. Many scuba schools and outfitters are available for first-time divers and seasoned enthusiasts.
One of the major attractions for diving in the Perhentian Islands is its affordability. Prices are significantly lower than in other parts of Asia, with dives ranging from RM 85-100 per dive and an open water certification course costing around RM 1100 per person.
You can dive around the marine park or visit nearby Lang Tengah Island for a change of scenery. If you’re not a certified diver, don’t worry – the Discovery Scuba Diving (DSD) course is a fantastic way to get a taste of the underwater world before committing to a full course.
The DSD course starts with a short theory session, introducing diving and essential safety information. Then, you’ll move on to a practical session in shoulder-deep water, where you’ll get used to wearing and using scuba gear.
Once comfortable, you’ll head out to sea and dive under close supervision to a depth of up to 8 metres. The instructors in the Perhentian Islands are known for their friendly approach, and they’ll be there to help and support you if you’re feeling nervous.
After you’ve experienced the wonders of diving through the DSD course, consider signing up for a PADI certification course. Being certified will enable you to explore even more of the incredible underwater world offered by the Perhentian Islands and beyond.
Island Hopping
Exploring the Perhentian Islands and their surrounding area is a fantastic adventure, and one of the best ways to do this is through island hopping.
With numerous beautiful islands to visit, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to enjoy Malaysia’s east coast’s stunning natural beauty and vibrant marine life.
The Terengganu Marine Park, which includes Perhentian Besar, Kecil, Serenggeh, Rawa, and the Redang archipelago, boasts around 25 dive sites. Established in 1994, the marine park is gazetted and protected, allowing you to see marine life in its full glory.
Whether you prefer snorkelling or diving, you will have a memorable experience.
One of the must-visit locations during your island-hopping adventure is Redang Island, part of the Redang archipelago. While a 60-minute boat rides away, Redang Island makes a great day trip destination. It’s essential to note that there’s no regular ferry service to and from Redang, so you’ll need to hire a private charter for your journey.
A typical day trip to Redang Island starts at around RM 800-900 per person, which might seem a bit pricey but is worth it for the unforgettable experience.
Explore the Beaches
While staying at Perhentian Islands, you might have already explored Long Beach and Coral Bay, but take advantage of other pristine alternatives.
Here are more beaches to explore, offering tranquility and relaxation away from the party scene:
- Adam and Eve Beach (Kecil). Adam and Eve Beach is a secluded, tranquil, and small beach with delicate sand. It is ideal for relaxing, sunbathing, picnicking, and snorkeling.
- Petani Beach (Kecil) Another hidden gem, Petani Beach, lies south of Perhentian Kecil. It’s picture-perfect, laid-back, and offers opportunities for swimming and snorkeling in a nearby coral garden. Petani Beach Chalet houses the only hotel and restaurant on this stretch, serving delicious Malaysian cuisine and providing hammocks for relaxation.
- Teluk Dalam (Besar) A white sandy beach on Besar Island, Teluk Dalam is not as popular but is pretty, secluded, and peaceful. You can walk along the shore or access it via a water taxi or jungle trail. There are resorts and restaurants, and swimming is possible in the shallow waters, despite the Malay word “dalam” meaning deep.
- Love Beach, aka Romantic Beach (Besar) Another lovely beach on Besar Island, Love Beach, is also known as Romantic Beach.
- Keranji Beach, Teluk Kerma (Kecil)
- Perhentian Island Resort Beach This beach is open for public visits even if you’re not staying there. It’s beautiful, well-maintained, and perfect for swimming or relaxing away from crowds.
- Coral Bay Located on the northwest coast of Perhentian Kecil, Coral Bay is the second most popular place to stay after Long Beach but is quieter and more peaceful. Named after the beautiful coral gardens just off the shore, it has sadly seen most corals die off due to over-development. It’s a 15-minute walk from Long Beach via an inland trail. With a few resorts facing the sunset and a couple of nice restaurants, it’s an excellent spot to unwind and enjoy the bay view.
- Teluk Keke Affectionately called KK, Teluk Keke is southwest of Perhentian Besar, close to Tuna Bay. A coral garden is in front of the beach, and snorkeling is possible off the shore. The beach is scenic, with beautiful white rock boulders, and can sometimes get crowded with tourists and boats. Visit during high tide or watch a spectacular sunset to make the most of it. There is a campground as well as a small café on this beach. If you’re coming from Kecil, it’s most likely included in your snorkel tour. Else, you can hire a water taxi. To reach the beach from Besar, walk south from Tuna Bay, pass the campsite or take the jungle route from Flora Bay.
Jungle Trekking
Exploring the inland of both Besar and Kecil offers a variety of exciting jungle trekking experiences. As you venture through the lush rainforests and streams, you’ll find many small trails that connect the beaches, allowing you to hop from one to another easily.
During your trek, please pay attention to the wildlife surrounding you, as it’s common to spot spiders, monkeys, geckos, and monitor lizards. Be prepared for the journey by bringing plenty of water if venturing on a trek lasting more than an hour, and remember to wear proper shoes instead of flip-flops.
Perhentian Besar Jungle Trails
If you are in Besar, one popular jungle trail connects Flora Bay to Teluk KK. Another recommended route is from the Perhentian Island Resort to Teluk Dalam, which covers approximately 2.5 km from the north to south of the island, taking about an hour to complete.
Perhentian Kecil Jungle Trails
You can try the short and easy trail connecting Long Beach and Coral Bay in Kecil, which takes around 15 minutes to walk.
This path is signposted and paved, offering a pleasant east-to-west walk across the island. The trailhead can be found near the start of the Long Beach-Coral Bay route.
Another option is to hike from Coral Bay to Petani Beach and then onto the village. This coastline trek provides a well-shaded path through the foliage with regular ocean views, taking approximately one hour to complete.
Lastly, you may hike to the windmill, which offers a unique view of the islands and will be covered in the next section. So, lace up your shoes and get ready to explore the stunning beauty of the Perhentian Islands through jungle trekking.
Hike to Windmill for Panoramic View
Perhentian Kecil is known for its two giant windmills that are no longer in use but attract many visitors due to their unique location and stunning views. To explore this popular attraction, you have two options to reach the top:
- From Long Beach: Follow the trail that starts close to Bubu Resort. Keep an eye out for the signage near the campsite. It’s a moderately challenging 30-minute hike, with a steep climb in the beginning for about 100 meters before easing off. The heat can be intense, so wear sun protection, comfortable shoes (not slippers), and bring water.
- Hire a taxi boat: Alternatively, you can take a taxi boat and climb the staircase, which consists of almost 400 steps to reach the top. Be cautious while ascending or descending, as the stairs are not well-maintained, and some sections are broken.
At the top, you’ll be greeted by the sight of the imposing windmills, surrounded by barbed wire. Enjoy the stunning view of the open ocean and picturesque landscape from here.
Further down, you’ll find an old, abandoned concrete staircase leading to a broken, rusted jetty. The crystal clear blue marine water is inviting, making this an ideal photography spot. To the far left, you’ll also notice the D’Lagoon Resort.
If you venture down the staircase, exercise caution – especially near the jetty, as there are broken, rotten, and missing wooden planks. During low tide, you can walk down the stone boulders beside the jetty and discover your own private beach.
Allow at least two hours to fully enjoy this captivating experience on Perhentian Kecil Island.
Watch Turtles at Turtle Sanctuary Beach
The Perhentian Turtle Sanctuary on Pulau Perhentian Besar is one of Malaysia’s best places to observe turtles. This pristine beach boasts clear water and white sand, making it an excellent spot for snorkelling.
It is one of the cleanest beaches on the Perhentian Islands and offers a unique opportunity to see green turtles and hawksbill turtles up close. Don’t worry if you don’t spot one every time – they might be shy on some days!
While the turtle hatchery program is no longer running, turtles come here to lay their eggs from June to September. Apart from the turtles, you can also marvel at the colourful corals and fish that inhabit the waters nearby.
If you plan to stay longer, remember to bring your food and drink as there are limited facilities around here.
Visiting Turtle Sanctuary Beach is often included in snorkelling packages, but if you prefer a less crowded experience, the best time to visit is in the morning. Hire a taxi boat and arrange for them to pick you up in an hour or two. The beach is just a short boat ride from Perhentian Island Resort or 3-4 minutes from Barat at Besar.
So pack your snorkelling gear, grab a friendly taxi boat, and head to Turtle Sanctuary Beach for an unforgettable experience with these gentle marine creatures.

Kayaking offers a unique perspective of the islands, allowing you to capture stunning photos and genuinely appreciate the area’s beauty.
As you paddle around the islands, you can visit secluded lagoons and shores inaccessible by foot. The water is typically flat, making it an enjoyable experience even for those new to kayaking. You can either venture out alone or sign up for a group tour, depending on your preferences and experience level.
If you’ve never kayaked before, it’s worth having a taster session to get a feel for the activity, as it can be tiring. However, if you’re feeling energetic and up for a challenge, try kayaking around the entire coast of Perhentian Kecil. The journey is approximately 14km, and it can take 3 to 5 hours to complete, depending on your fitness level.
So grab a paddle, hop in a kayak, and discover the hidden gems and breathtaking beauty of the Perhentian Islands from the water.

Fishing Village
The fishing village can be easily accessed by a water taxi that costs around RM15 from Besar or a 15-minute journey from Long Beach. If you’re up for a walk, you can hike from Petani Beach in Kecil in about 30 minutes. Most locals reside here, with around 30 colourful houses dotting the village.
With fishing as the primary source of livelihood for the villagers, you’ll have an opportunity to learn about the local way of life. Stroll around the area as the villagers set out in their boats each morning and return with their catch.

A R Rahman Mosque
The A R Rahman Mosque is another fascinating attraction to visit. With its unique architecture and white exterior, this majestic structure appears floating on water as it was built over the sea to reduce land usage. Built in 2011 with a budget of RM13.5 million, the mosque was constructed to cater to the growing number of local Muslims while also promoting tourism.
When visiting the mosque, remember to dress modestly. Males should cover their knees, while females should do the same and wear a scarf to cover their heads. The mosque is open to visitors from 8 am to 8 pm daily.
Experience the charm of the local fishing village and marvel at the A R Rahman Mosque for a genuine and memorable insight into the rich culture of the Perhentian Islands.
