Redang Island Weather

You are currently viewing Redang Island Weather

Redang Island is a popular holiday destination off the east coast of Malaysia. It has a tropical climate, and the average temperature is 30degC, with May being the warmest month, reaching 31degC.

Just like the rest of Malaysia, this tropical island is not affected by seasonal temperatures. However, the North-East monsoon brings heavy precipitation to the east coast of Malaysia during the winter months ( Nov to Feb) and affects the activities on this island.

To determine the best time to visit Redang, it helps to look at the weather conditions throughout the year.

May to August (Summer)

The hottest months in Redang Island also bring the most crowds. The days are sunny and bright, perfect for outdoor and water activities. Light breeze in the morning and late afternoon, averaging 4km/h, compensates for the heat. In August, the wind gusts can pick up to 8 to 10km/h.

The daytime temperatures can soar up to a maximum of 34 deg C, and the nighttime cools off to as low as 23deg C. Rain is rare, with an average precipitation of just 144m. May and June are the hottest months, while the temperature dip in August in preparation for the monsoon.

September to October (Autumn/Fall)

During these two months, humidity and rainfall increase, with 24 days of precipitation on average. The daytime maximum temperature drops to an average of 29deg C while precipitation increases to 288m. The daily sunshine hours average is 6 hours.

With the arrival of the monsoon, the ocean becomes rough and choppy. Many resorts are starting to close down in preparation for the monsoon.

November to February (Winter)

The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain, stormy weather, and strong wind to Redang Island. Most resorts and hotels are closed during this period. Due to high swells, the ferry service is halted as well.

December is the peak of the monsoon period and brings up to 674mm of precipitation. The average wind speed hits around 10 km/h with strong gusts up to 15 km/h. The island is also subjected to frequent storms.

The temperature in November and December averages 25decC. The highest recorded temperature is 28degC and the lowest temperature is 22degC.

February marks the beginning of the end of the monsoon season. The rainy days are occasional (up to 15days in the month), with the average precipitation being only 110m. Day temperatures reach a high of 29 deg.

The tail of the monsoon still lingers in February, and the sea conditions aren’t 100% safe yet for travelers.

March to April (Spring)

March and April mark the beginning of the tourist season in Redang Island. With less crowd as compared to the peak summer months, some travellers take advantage of the peace.

March is technically the tail end of the monsoon; as such, the ocean can still be rough. Average temperatures are 30degC high and 22degC lows. Rainfall averages 15mm with 15 days of rain each month.

It gets hotter in April, with the highest at around 32degC. Humidity is at an all-time high at 83%. The weather is more stable, and travellers can enjoy uninterrupted travel to the island.
